Q: What do I need to do to book a hunt with Great Hunt Outfitters?
A: You can fill out the contact page and e-mail it back to me or you can call me at (301)791-4892. I will guide you through the rest of the process once we settle on a date. I do take a 50% deposit with a signed contract with a full reimbursement if you do not draw a bow tag.
Q: What type of lodging and accommodations do Great Hunt Outfitters offer?
A: There have been arrangements with several hotels and bed & breakfasts for your convenience. See the links under the packages category for a more detailed look. The establishments listed offer discount rates for customers of Great Hunt Outfitters.
Q: Where and which county will I be hunting?
A: You and your group will be assigned a farm. Throughout the year you will be given the opportunity to travel to that farm to film with me or help me check cameras on the farm you will be hunting. In the past we have patterned several good bucks with the cameras and harvested those bucks where we had the cameras set up. The video footage we get in July and August is amazing. It really adds a lot more excitement to your hunt when you see on film what is running around on the farm you will be hunting.
Q: Are there any trophy fees or fines for harvesting small bucks?
A: There are no trophy fees. It tickles me to see guys harvest the buck of their dreams. I do impose a $500 fine for any bucks under 130 inches. This is a way of insuring that Bambi has a chance to grow into the monster buck he was meant to be.
Q: What does the hunt include?
A: My hunts are semi-guided hunts. This means that one of my guides or I personally will get you to the farm and show you hot areas for stand locations. We recommend setting at least 2 stands to help against being patterned as well as for the changing winds.
Q: Are the guides and the outfitter bow hunters themselves?
A: Yes!!!!!!!! We are all fanatical bow hunters. My guides are all seasoned hunters and will do everything short of shooting the animal for you to make sure you have a good hunt.
Q: Do you provide tree stands?
A: Most of the farms have 20 foot ladder sticks already in place. I have found that the really serious hunters like to hunt out of their own stands. I prefer to stay out of the hunting areas as much as possible. Special arrangements can be made if you or your group would like stands up before you get there. I would prefer it be done through the summer months.
Q: Is there a place to process the deer or do we have to do it ourselves?
A: Each hunting location has at least one butcher shop within minutes
of the farm. Your guide will assist you in getting your deer called in as
well as getting it to the butcher shop.
Q: Are there maps of the farm our group will be hunting?
A: Yes. We have aerial and topographical maps of all the farms. Upon arriving into camp you will get together with your guide and work out a strategy using the maps.
Q: Do you have any references from prior hunts?
A: Yes. References are provided for both successful and unsuccessful hunts.
Q: Is the ground we are going to be hunting privately owned?
A: Yes. All the ground is privately leased by Great Hunt Outfitters. In most cases they are working farms with corn and beans. In addition, I have planted red clover to draw deer from neighboring farms.
Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Safety Harness (required) All necessary Permits; License-Tags, Habitat Stamp, Bow, arrows and all the accessories:
- Climbing tree stand, climbing sticks, blind, lock on tree stand (whatever you prefer)
- Camouflage Clothing and gloves
- Scent Control Clothing (highly recommended)
- Scent Control soup
- Rain Gear
- Boots and Socks
- Binoculars
- Rangefinder
- Calls, grunt tubes, and rattling horns
- Deer Scents
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Rope used to lower and raise you bow
- Bow hanger
- Tie raps for your bow when traveling in and out of farm (Illinois Law)
- Clothing for any kind of weather
- Cameras (digital scouting camera as well as still shot)
- ATV’s depending on the farm and the size of the group
